Day 16: Hiking My Camino de Santiago

August 4, 2018

Today was relatively uneventful. I walked 18.16 miles from Carrión de los Condes to Moratinos on the Camino de Santiago.

Most of the walking was alone so I walked at a pretty good pace. I walked for a brief time with Ole and can’t say enough good things about him. I learned he lost his father when he was 15 years old. He started working at that time to help support his mom and siblings. He mentioned that it is important for him to be busy and always learning in retirement. That definitely sounds like good advice.

I met my first Pilgrim from Taiwan but have met others from South Korea. I also met another German who is walking his 8th Camino. His first Camino was in 2011 and he has come annually ever since.

The village of Moratinos is quite small. But so were the two villages before Moratinos. The guide book I have suggested staying in the village before this but I decided to go further since I was making good time and it would make tomorrow’s walk shorter. In three days I will enter León if you are following on a map.

You could say my body is fatigued each day after walking in this heat. But the only pain I feel is on the tip of the toe next to my big toe on my right foot. It is touching the inside of my shoe as I walk. I suppose my feet are swelling in this heat. Nevertheless, I am still counting my blessings because there are people who have more physical issues than I am facing with my toe.

Today’s photo is another from the trail. I am walking by hay fields, cut and uncut wheat fields, sunflower fields, etc.

I hope you are having a great weekend! Speaking of days, I rarely remember the day of the month or the day of the week as I walk. And that pleases me because I have few worries or thoughts about other things while I walking. I am truly GRATEFUL!

Brief descriptions of the photos:

  1. This is a memorial on the outskirts of Carrión de los Condes. It appears that a pilgrim is kneeling in front of Joseph, Mary, and Baby Jesus. I believe the plaque is translated "In life you are a pilgrim to the eternity of God."
