Day -55: Preparing for My Camino de Santiago

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

May 25, 2018

Last weekend I was unable to complete a training hike for my Camino de Santiago. I had a commitment to spend the weekend with my father on his Honor Flight trip from Nebraska to Washington, DC. To do it, I had to fly to Nebraska so I could fly back with Dad and other veterans to DC. I then flew back to Nebraska with them and caught a flight back to DC the next day. It was a great experience for me and a touching experience for the veterans. I highly recommend that veterans participate in the Honor Flight. (Note: The image below is of the veterans from the Panhandle of Nebraska who were on the Honor Flight. My father is fourth from the left in a red coat.)

If you are so inclined, I encourage you to consider making a charitable contribution to Honor Flight based upon my experience with them. However, before you send a contribution to the National office, check your local area to see if there is a local group raising money to send veterans from your area to Washington, DC on an Honor Flight.

I will send a contribution later this year to the group near my hometown. I believe the veterans in my group had a better experience than the average Honor Flight veteran based upon the volunteers in Chadron, Nebraska. They were awesome. The 501(c)(3) organization in Nebraska is: Nebraska Mid-America Honor Flight Inc.

With the upcoming 3-day weekend I plan on walking each of the three days--Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to see how my body responds to three days of reasonably long walks of 10 to 15 miles. Plus, there is a decent chance I will walk in some rain and will get to see how my body and feet respond to walking in the rain. Have a Happy Memorial Day weekend!
